New Photographs by Cotch Diaz

Old Town Plaza Building A Lobby Art
On Tuesday we installed seven new photographs by local artist Cotch Diaz in the lobbies at Old Town Plaza. Born in Guam, Cotch now lives in North Park and has since turned his camera toward many of the iconic landscapes of San Diego. As you enter building A, three works capture the downtown skyline in distinctly different ways. The photo to the left focuses on the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina. This well known downtown building has a highly reflective metallic exterior. By printing this photo on metallic paper the colors of the entire composition are energized, creating one of the most dramatic photos in the building.

Old Town Plaza Office Building Lobby Art Work
Across from this shot is an incredible view of the downtown skyline printed on a single sheet of aluminum. It's a beautifully composed photograph. The high contrast skyline displays exceptional detail at center whilst framed by a cinema-graphically blurred border.

Located in the two niches is a diptych of the Coronado Bay Bridge that is also printed on metallic paper. The dreary, cloud filled sky and sepia-like coloring, offer a refreshing view of a city that is widely known for its year-round meteorologic perfection.

USAF B-52 - the symbol of modern American Air Power
Building B's lobby is dominated by an immense print of a Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, the most iconic aircraft within the Air Force's fleet of strategic bombers. Taken on Andersen Air Base, Guam, this photo is both furiously powerful yet demure. The hulking mass of the fuselage juxtaposed against the razor edge of the tail wing beautifully illustrates the lethal confidence of this aircraft.

The last photo is a gorgeous shot of Mission Bay. While the serene colors and rippling water are well known elements of the San Diego landscape, the obscured landmass in the background lends the photo some anonymity. It's a photo that surprises you in its ability to hold your attention with such a placid subject.

We encourage everyone to take some time to enjoy these photographs and please let us know what you think about them. Additional photographs by Cotch will be installed over the next few months.

San Diego County Sheriff's Department: Volunteer Work Outside of Old Town Plaza

SDSO SAR Desert Training: Borrego Springs - August 2010
Most of our readers probably do not know that one of Intermarket's Core Values is service to one's community/country.  Matt and I both believe quite strongly that all of us have the ability to serve in the community in a meaningful capacity.  When I am not running our real estate business at Intermarket Investment Group, I also volunteer as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department as part of the Search And Rescue Team as Special Projects Coordinator. This is tremendously rewarding volunteer work as it affords me an opportunity to give back to the community and the citizens of San Diego County. San Diego has been home to my family for nearly my entire life, so giving back to the community is important to me.

Many people ask me how did I get involved with the Sheriff's Department as a Reserve Deputy?  This project actually began in the winter of 2007 when I applied to the SDSO Search And Rescue Academy which started January 2008.  The SDSO SAR Academy is a four month long training program which covers a wide variety of topics including First Aid/CPR, Land Navigation, Radios/Communication, K9 Operations, Court Room Testimony, Helicopter Operations, Orienteering, Disaster Response and Physical Fitness.  The PT component is an timed 8-mile cross country hike/run in full uniform with a 20 pound pack NOT including your water.  The current unit record is held by one of Old Town Plaza's very own - Dan Rodriguez of Select Law Group in Suite A-245.  Dan, or "D-Rod" as he is known in the unit, completed the qual hike in just under 1 hour 24 minutes.  I finished second in 1 hour 26 minutes.  The SAR Academy holds classroom sessions every Tuesday and Thursday night from 1830-2130 and every other Saturday from 0800-1700.

Tech Rescue Ropes Training Rappelling Tower - GREAT FUN!
After completing the SAR Academy, I went on to the Grossmont College Police Academy to continue my law enforcement specific training.  We covered basic forms of the California Penal Code, arrest procedures, impact weapons, firearms training, chemical agents, first aid/CPR, close order drill, PT, emergency vehicle operations and defensive tactics.  The GCCC Police Academy was a tremendous amount of work to take on while running Intermarket, but the rewards have been commensurate with the effort I had to put into the academy.  The GCCC PA runs every TUE and THR night from 1730-2200 and every SAT from 0700-1700 from September to December.

Swearing-in ceremony at SDSO with my Academy Classmates
Our missions vary widely, but I have participated in the search for Amber Dubois, Chelsea King and numerous other searches and law enforcement activities around the county.  Serving my community, country and fellow man is a major priority for me.  My parents raised me with the understanding that "to whom much is given, much is expected."  Serving my community with the Sheriff's Department is one way I stay true to the values with which my parents raised me.

Desert training in Borrego Springs is another mission set we take on in SDSO SAR.  About ten days ago we tested a new uniform for SAR - the Desert/Hot Weather Uniform.  Designed primarily for hot weather environments, many samples were acquired and tested for deployment with SDSO SAR.  The winning uniform consists of a Columbia Tamiami II shirt (khaki), Under Armour Generation II Tactical Pants (desert sand), REI Sahara Nomad Cape Hat (khaki boonie hat optional), Oakley SI Assault Boot (desert), Oakley SI Assault Gloves (desert), Oakley Assault A-Frame Goggles and an SDSO-issued traffic safety vest for situations requiring high visibility.  Overall, the Desert/Hot Weather Uniform exceeded our expectations.  In particular, the Oakley eyewear, gloves and boots were locked-on and delivered the performance, quality and innovation I've come to expect from Oakley products in general.  The Under Armour Gen II Tactical Pants were also a home run.  I'm quite happy we have an opportunity to deploy products from companies who value the service and sacrifice of our fighting men and women in uniform.  I tip my hat to them all.

SDPD Quad/ATV Training - August 2010
To the right is a picture from a Quad/ATV Training we did with the San Diego Police Department a few weeks ago on Fiesta Island and Mission Trails Regional Park.  The guys from SDPD were top-notch instructors and we learned lots of valuable skills for off-road enforcement during the course.  I'm looking forward to more opportunities to work with SDPD.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend a luncheon hosted by the Honorary Deputy Sheriff's Association.  Sheriff William D. Gore was the keynote speaker.  It was a terrific event where Sheriff Gore shared some of the fantastic success stories from our department that have been made possible by the visionary leadership of some of our local leaders.  In particular, I was encouraged by Sheriff Gore's remarks concerning SDSO's focus on finding and deploying effective cutting edge technology to enhance public safety and the effectiveness of the Department as an innovative law enforcement organization.

Stay tuned to LeaseOldTown.net for more stories about Intermarket Investment Group giving back to the great community we call San Diego.  I would encourage anyone reading this to find a way to help out in your community - there are so many ways in which just a small amount of effort on our part will go a long way in helping others in ways we may not even be aware.  Your willingness and desire to help are more valuable to your community than you might realize.

The Plague of Bottled Water

August marks the third month of another new experiment here in the San Diego commercial office of Intermarket Investment Group, LLC: can tap water be utilized as a way of saving money, improving quality of life at the office and helping the environment all at the same time?

YES - it can do all of those things simultaneously.

The solution to this problem is called the PW 1R by Pure Water Technology of San Diego.  This machine completely replaced our Arrowhead Bottled Water service.  As an added bonus, it looks really cool too.  This is a picture of the PW 1R we have in our office with Matthew's Sigg Bottle in the fill port:

The PW 1R at Intermarket Investment Group, LLC

Save Money
We were spending approximately $50-70/month for bottled water service from Arrowhead.  The costs were lower in the winter when we drank less, but higher in the summer when we often drank more water to keep cool in the summer heat of San Diego.  With the PW 1R from PWT of SD, we have now fixed that cost to $59/month (I know, it doesn't save a whole lot of money, but just keep reading...).  As we continue to grow and expand our head count, this cost will remain fixed for this one machine.  By comparison, if we were to stay with Arrowhead, our monthly cost would only increase as we expanded our head count.  Naturally, our costs will rise if we add machines, but that goes without saying almost.

Improve Quality of Life
This is great - we no longer have to change bottles, store bottles and worry about water if we run out before our delivery date (believe it or not, this actually happened frequently and was a source of frustration).  Changing bottles was a pain in the rear end even though it wasn't that big of a deal.  It was just annoying.  Storing the bottles, on the other hand, was horrifically annoying and consumed space.  This is where we actually saved more money because now, instead of using $2.10 per square foot office space to store bottles, we could use it to actually do work and generate revenue.

Good for the Environment
Most people don't think of bottled water as being bad for the environment.  I would know because I used to be one of those people.  To get a bottle of water to our doorstep requires trucks to haul pumping equipment out to a water harvesting site (usually a lake).  Build the plant (consumes energy). Run the plant (consumes energy). Package the water in bottles (consumes energy, creates future plastic bottle waste). Load the bottled water onto trucks (energy). Drive the trucks on delivery routes (more energy and now diesel/petrol). Collect your dirty/used bottles. Haul the dirty bottles back to the plant for cleaning (energy, diesel, cleaning chemicals).  Repeat the process.

On average, the cost of manufacturing the bottle, shipping it to the bottling plant, harvesting the water and shipping it to a customer is equal to filling a quarter of a 5 gallon bottle with 1 gallon of oil.

Intermarket Investment Group, LLC of San Diego, CA no longer does anything of the sort.  We get our water from the tap where it goes directly into our PW 1R for filtration and produces water that is ten times better of us than regular San Diego tap water.  We never leave the office. We have no delivery trucks. We consume no diesel. We throw away no bottles. We don't transport empty bottles. The only footprint we are leaving with our new system is the 30 kilowatt hours we use each month to power the machine. It generates so little heat that HVAC cooling impact is not even an issue.

Old Town's Greenest Office Building - Old Town Plaza, San Diego
In today's world of resource scarcity, being a "green building" is not just about dual pane windows, PV cells on the roof or waterless urinals. It is an operational mentality that is focused on using what we already have and doing so in a smart fashion that is not wasteful.  It is a mindset. A dedication of purpose.

For more information on how you can be a part of the greenest office building in the Old Town neighborhood near Downtown San Diego, visit us online at www.LeaseOldTown.com or call us at 619-692-0802.
